Whether you have a tiny nook, an entire room in your home, or a commercial office space, it's important to build an environment that encourages productivity. Let's get started on the 5 tips you need to follow to build the perfect workspace.
Declutter regularly
When you're sitting in a cluttered or messy workspace chances are creativity won't flow well. I declutter my workspace every evening for this reason. This ensures the next day when I walk into my workspace I have a clean canvas with no distractions improving creativity and productivity.
Create daily lists
We all know I love to create yearly and quarterly goals, but what helps me reach those goals is my lists. I create a weekly list every Monday that I break down into various sections. In my case, it looks something like this: Digitial Marketing Schudualling for all subscriptions clients, logo development, website development, virtual meetings, calls, and misc. By seeing the list broken down into sections I know I can break down each day in the week to complete a section. This allows me to stay on top of everything, meet deadlines and time block days for creative work.
Decorate to inspire
Yes, the size of the space doesn't matter but what does matter is how space makes you feel. I'm lucky enough to have a room in my house dedicated to my office. I chose one that has a little sunshine throughout the day, as I know that's something that keeps me happy and engaged. I also decorated, very minimally because I'm most creative and productive in clean spaces. I chose a theme for my space and picked furniture and artwork that would inspire. Regardless of the size of your space, it's important that you feel inspired by the objects around you, so choose carefully. It doesn't have to be expensive just items that make you feel good.
Choose your furniture wisely
Since we just talked about decorating let's dive deeper into furniture. As much as I love cute work chairs - most of them are not ergonomically created. Choose a desk and chair that will give you the support you need and ensure you don't have aches and pains at the end of the day. Remember these are investment pieces that will last you a long time, so do your research and choose products that will allow you to make the most of your day. Remember being ergonomic doesn't always mean ugly! I was able to create a stunning glass top desk that can be adjusted at various levels from Ikea, mixed that with my Autonomous chair creates a space that is functional and encourages productivity.
Give technology a second space
Many of us use our cell phones and tablets in our workspace - it's almost a must-have! However, when you're working on a project that doesn't require these devices, slip them away as they can become very distracting. For example, I keep my phone in my office but instead of placing it on my desk while I work on brand or website development, I place it on a shelf behind me. This way I can still take calls/messages but won't get bored and think about scrolling for "a few minutes."
