DIY vs. Professional: Website Edition

There are some things you should DIY and others you shouldn’t. As a professional, I get asked this question quite often regarding design and honestly, my opinion varies based on the content being presented. Yes, tools like Canva create wonderful posts for Instagram, but does that mean you should DIY your website? Simply put, no.

There are many tools out there that would make you think that it’s easy to DIY a website, some of which designers may even use themselves. However, the difference between how we use them and how you go about it might be night and day!

Today I’m going to walk you through the reasons why you should hire a professional website designer vs. DIY-ing it.

Psychology of design.

This is a BIG one. Most designers have a degree/diploma, years of experience and have been studying design for a very long time. There is a reason why we place certain things a certain way - it’s not just because it looks pretty.

We’ve spent years studying navigation styles that deliver results! When we design your website, we want your business to grow and will implement a design that will help enforce this. It’s about the way viewers will navigate, the way your eye travels on a page and the functionality.

We’ll teach you how to use the tools to the fullest.

I can’t speak to all designers, but this is an important step in our process. We want you to feel empowered with your website, that’s why we teach you to use tools like your dashboard, analytics, blogs, automations, trigger emails, email marketing and more! Our session is recorded so that you can reference back to it PLUS we offer support for at least a month after your site is live. This allows you to take advantage of some of the DIY aspects of your website and build out your business!

Find you a platform that addresses your needs.

Your CMS (content management system) is the platform we use to create your website. There are many platforms that offer a variety of services. When you work with a designer we’ll get to know your lifestyle as well as your business needs and only then make a recommendation. I find when people DIY they don’t know what each platform really has to offer and end up choosing one they may have heard of through a friend. Just remember what works for them may not work for you.

Faster, more enjoyable experience.

What a professional can do in 3 months might just take you 3 years. I’m not joking or being dramatic - I actually have a client who spent 3 years trying to launch her website. She grew frustrated trying to figure it all out that one day she decided it was time to just budget for a professional. We completed the website in 3 months! Not only was the process faster but way more enjoyable as she was able to make her entire vision come to life through feedback meetings. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first nor do I think it will be the last time I hear a story like this.

You can always tell - say goodbye to templates.

As designers we want our websites to be unique that is why we want to go as template-free as possible - and in some cases completely template-free. The issue with templates is that anyone can have the same site as you even if you customize minor areas it might still look the same. Plus, you don’t want their brand messaging to interfere with yours. So stay clear of those templates!
